What does MetGIS stand for?
"Met" stands for meteorology and "GIS" is the acronym for geographic information systems. The link between these two makes MetGIS weather forecasts so accurate. Weather data are combined with detailed terrain data. This improves our forecasts enormously, especially in difficult terrain.
How did MetGIS arise?
It all began as a university-based research project. 10 years later experts from Europe, Russia, South America and Japan had developed the MetGIS algorithms. Several verification studies displayed a baffling accuracy. When more and more customers started knocking on the door MetGIS was founded.

The price of data packages for historical weather data (one-time query) consists of a setup price and the cost of the required amount of data. This depends on
- the number of desired data points/locations,
- the number of data years, as well as
- the number of required weather parameters.
The price curve flattens out very sharply when larger amounts of data are ordered.

Maps API: How many API calls do I need?
An API call allows access to a "weather tile". This corresponds to a 256 x 256 pixel segment of the weather map for a given time. Depending on the device, a map on the screen consists of approx. 15-20 tiles. The map is rebuilt whenever a user changes the parameter, the zoom level, the geographic section or the forecast time.
Based on experience, a user looks at 5 weather maps and downloads around 100 tiles during an average visit.
Example: 1,000 users access your weather map application ten times a month and look at 5 different map views each time. Then per month approx. 1,000 (users) x 10 (page visits per month) x 100 (estimated value for tiles/visit) = 1,000,000 tiles (equivalent to API calls) are required.

Point API: How many API calls do I need?
An API call provides the weather forecast for the next few days in various time resolutions for a single location, as well as current weather and astronomical data (depending on the data package).
Example: The updated weather forecast for the next few days is accessed twice a day for 100 locations. Then about 100 (places) x 2 (daily updates) x 30 (days/month) = 6,000 API calls per month will be needed.
Hist API: How many API calls do I need?
An API call allows access to the daily updated historical weather information for the last week (or last month) for a single location. When retrieving the data in daily resolution (incl. max/min values), one API call is sufficient for all weather parameters, while data in hourly resolution requires a separate API call for each weather parameter.
Example: The hourly weather data for air temperature and humidity for 50 locations should be updated once a day. Then 50 (locations) x 2 (number of parameters) x 30 (days/month) = 3,000 API calls per month are needed.
To find out the exact price of the data you need, go to the "One Time Query - Bulk Download" section of our Historical Weather Overview page.
- There you select the country and the desired temporal resolution of the data.
- Finally, you will be taken to the historical weather data order page, where the package price will be displayed according to your entries.
How can I reach you?
The MetGIS team can be reached on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. CET on +43 1 890 90 32. Conversations outside of these times, video conferences or personal meetings in our office in Vienna are also possible, as long as you let us know in good time.
Where do I find additional information?
Detailed information regarding prices, weather parameters, forecast coverage, time zones, API calls, technical documentation and much more can be found on our specific pages for Point API, Maps API and Hist API, and the FAQ areas there.
What is your weather data based on?
MetGIS has developed its own, verified weather algorithms and modeling approaches. These combine precise terrain data with millions of measurement data from ground-based weather stations, radar, satellites, weather balloons, weather buoys and aircraft. The output are ultra-precise weather analyzes and forecasts.
